Substation Senior Structural Engineer
About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves leading, overseeing, reviewing, and executing structural engineering tasks for high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with steel structure and foundation analysis & design, and will work closely with project teams to ensure reliable, resilient, and sustainable power systems.
Responsibilities
- Ledesign and detailing of substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Ledesign and detailing of foundation components including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types.
- Supports physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
- Prepares and/or reviews specifications for construction and materials.
- Assigns project tasks and provides technical guidance to project team members.
- Performs quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
- Collaborates with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources.
- Collaborates with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Leads multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
- Identifies and develops specific technical expertise, attends training and seminars, and assists with developing technical papers and presentations.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime.
- Previous consulting firm experience.
- Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- SE license or ability to obtain.
- SE license in Hawaii and California.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
- Experience with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Experience using STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent software.
