About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves leading and overseeing the structural engineering aspects of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV.
Responsibilities
- Led, overseen, reviewed, and/or executed structural engineering tasks for various substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Performed engineering duties including detailed design, calculations, and detailing for fabrication or development of loading and concept drawings for submittal to a steel fabricator.
- Led, overseen, reviewed, and/or executed foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and potentially other types.
- Supported physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
- Prepared and/or reviewed specifications for construction & materials.
- Assigned project tasks and provided technical guidance to project team members.
- Conducted quality checks and reviews for project deliverables per the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements.
- Collaborated with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources.
- Collaborated with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Directed, mentored, trained, and/or supervised one or more Project Engineers, EIT’s, or CADD/Designers.
- Led multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
- Identified and developed specific technical expertise, attended training and seminars focused on advancing technical understanding, and assisted with developing technical papers and/or presentations.
- Participated in project reviews as needed.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- SE license or ability to obtain preferred.
- Previous consulting firm experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime.
- Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional, department, and technical managers and project staff.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- SE license in Hawaii and California is a plus.
- Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
- Experience with the latest AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
