Substation Senior Structural Engineer
About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves leading, overseeing, reviewing, and executing structural engineering tasks for high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in structural design, familiarity with industry standards, and a proven track record of collaborating with diverse teams.
Responsibilities
- Ledesign and detailed engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Ledesign and detailed engineering tasks for foundation design, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types.
- Supports physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
- Prepares and/or reviews specifications for construction and materials.
- Assigns project tasks and provides technical guidance to project team members.
- Coordinates and/or performs quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
- Collaborates with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources.
- Collaborates with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- May also assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime.
- Previous consulting firm experience.
- Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- SE license or ability to obtain preferred.
- SE license in Hawaii and California is a plus.
- Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
- Experience with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Working knowledge of the latest AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or Equivalent.
- Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood.
- Understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis.
- Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.

Pay
The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. The targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $132,107 - $204,500.
