About the role

HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves leading, overseeing, reviewing, and executing structural engineering tasks for high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV.

Responsibilities

  • Ledesign and detailed design of substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
  • Ledesign and detailed design of foundation members such as drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types.
  • Supports the layout design, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
  • Prepares and/or reviews specifications for construction and materials.
  • Assigns project tasks and provides technical guidance to project team members.
  • Performs quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
  • Collaborates with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources.
  • Collaborates with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
  • Directs, mentors, trains, and/or supervises junior engineers.
  • Leads multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
  • Identifies and develops specific technical expertise and attends training and seminars.
  • Develops and presents technical papers and/or presentations at industry conferences.
  • Participates in project reviews as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered.
  • Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime.
  • Previous consulting firm experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity, including foundation and steel structural design.
  • Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional, department, and technical managers and project staff.
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • SE license or ability to obtain preferred.
  • SE license in Hawaii and California is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
  • Experience using industry standard design software, including STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or Equivalent.
