About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves leading, overseeing, reviewing, and executing structural engineering tasks for high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in steel structure and foundation analysis & design, and will work closely with project teams to ensure the successful delivery of projects.
Responsibilities
- Ledesign and detailed design of substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Ledesign and detailed design of foundation elements including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types, using industry standard software.
- Supports the physical layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bill of materials.
- Prepares and/or reviews specifications for construction and materials.
- Assigns project tasks and provides technical guidance to project team members.
- Performs quality checks and reviews for project deliverables according to HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements.
- Collaborates with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources.
- Collaborates with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Directs, mentors, trains, and/or supervises one or more Project Engineers, EIT’s, or CADD/Designers.
- Leads multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
- Identifies and develops specific technical expertise and attends training and seminars focused on advancing their discipline.
- Assists with developing technical papers and/or presentations for industry conferences or other events.
- Participates in project reviews as needed.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license, preferably in Hawaii and California.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime.
- Previous consulting firm experience.
- Working knowledge of the latest AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional, department, and technical managers and project staff.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications

Skills
- Technical design experience with physical/outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity up to 500kV.
- Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
- Experience using industry standard design software, including STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or Equivalent.
- Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
- Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood.
- Understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis.
- Experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
- Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
