About the role
Xcel Energy is seeking talented electrical engineers to join our Substation Engineering & Design team. We are hiring at the Staff, Senior, and Principal Engineer levels, with placement based on experience, technical expertise, and demonstrated competencies.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and delivery of critical substation infrastructure projects that help power the communities we serve.
- Perform as a staff advisor and consultant in a technical specialty, a type of facility or equipment, or a program function.
- Develop new or improved engineering solutions, mentoring engineers and designers.
- Serve as a valued technical resource across the organization.
- Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects and interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET accredited, electrical engineering degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2+ years relevant engineering experience.
- Demonstrated broad knowledge & proficiency in specialty area, knowledge of related specialties, & general knowledge of other related disciplines.
- Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills & core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
- EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- Required bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET accredited curriculum, electrical engineering degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5+ years relevant engineering experience with EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) required; 7+ years relevant engineering experience without EIT/FE.
- Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
- Preferred PE (Professional Engineer) registration may be required depending on business need.
Skills
- Experience with electric transmission and/or distribution substation engineering and design.
- Experience with EHV substation projects up to and including 345 kV.
- Familiarity with utility industry standards, engineering best practices, and applicable codes.
- Experience providing field, construction, commissioning, or operational support for substation projects.
- Experience leading technical project work and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
- Experience developing engineering standards, specifications, design criteria, or work processes.
- Experience mentoring engineers, designers, or other technical personnel.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred.

Pay
The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $81,000.00 to $156,600.00 per year.
