About the role

The Substation Engineer II - P&C serves as an engineer on electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. They will apply NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards in engineering design and independently produce:

  • One-line diagrams
  • Three-line diagrams
  • Potential and current schematics
  • Control schematics
  • Alarm schematics
  • Protection and control specifications
  • I/O mapping

Familiarity with protection scheme functionality is required. Ability to develop relay settings and associated points mapping is preferred but not required. The role involves collaboration with internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects of design for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects, including:
    • Development of one-line, three-line, potential, current, control, alarm, and communications schematics
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Protection and control specifications (preferred)
    • I/O mapping and points mapping (preferred)
    • Relay settings (preferred)
    • Documentation for design calculations
    • Construction documentation (sequence and RFP)
  • Technical support for procurement and construction
  • Active coordination with project stakeholders
  • Works seamlessly with a P&C Designer to develop schematics and associated wiring diagrams
  • Coordinates efforts with other project team members, identifying when collaboration with disciplines such as transmission line, distribution line, and telecom engineers is needed
  • Assists in identifying key client interests and drivers, communicating these to the project team
  • Serves as a technical specialist for system protection and communication, providing consultation and guidance to project teams
  • Removes impediments obstructing the engineering team from achieving its goals
  • Advises management on maximizing team ROI
  • Attends all client technical review meetings

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized accredited program
  • Minimum of 4 years of related work experience in high voltage substation design – P&C
  • EIT Certification
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation
  • Strong familiarity with NEC and National Electrical Safety Code
  • Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional engineering license or ability to obtain one within 2 years of hire
  • Experience in protection device coordination
  • Knowledge of construction practices and constructability
  • Experience with proposal writing and project estimating
  • Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes
