Substation Engineer
Overview
Our client, a leading employee-owned engineering consulting firm specializing in power, renewable energy, transportation, and water infrastructure, is seeking a Substation Engineer to support utility and renewable energy projects. This role will develop and review substation designs, perform engineering analyses and AC/DC studies, provide technical leadership, and support project execution from design through quality review. The ideal candidate has experience with substation physical design and/or protection and control design, strong knowledge of utility substation engineering practices, and the ability to obtain a PE license within one year. Up to 15% travel may be required. This full-time remote opportunity is available to candidates located anywhere within the United States.
Pay and Benefits
Pay Rate: $99,200 – $134,100

Responsibilities
- Develop and review utility substation design drawings, including General Arrangements, Elevations, Cable and Conduit Plans, Grounding Plans, AC/DC Schematics, Panel Elevations, Equipment Enclosure Plans, and Wiring Diagrams.
- Prepare specifications, reports, and engineering documentation to ensure compliance with client standards and sound engineering practices.
- Serve as a technical lead on moderately complex substation engineering projects.
- Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute detailed phases of assigned project work.
- Develop design recommendations, modifications, and technical solutions for utility substations.
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analyses related to substation design.
- Conduct AC and DC substation studies.
- Investigate and resolve design issues through engineering analysis, field observations, and technical evaluations.
- Perform detailed quality control (QC) reviews of design calculations and engineering deliverables.
- Coverage project design activities and communicate technical requirements with project team members.
- Provide technical guidance and support to engineers and other project personnel.
- Utilize evolving technologies and AI tools to improve workflows, problem-solving, and project execution.
- Support project-related travel activities as needed (up to 15%).
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).
- Minimum 4 years of electrical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; ability to obtain PE licensure within one year required.
- Experience with physical design and/or protection and control design of electrical power substations.
- Ability to develop and review substation design drawings, including General Arrangements, Elevations, Cable and Conduit Plans, Grounding Plans, Physical Connection Details, AC/DC Schematics, and Wiring Diagrams.
- Experience performing AC and DC substation studies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong understanding of utility substation engineering principles and practices.
- Ability to coordinate multiple project tasks and meet project schedules.
- Demonstrated ability to adopt new technologies and innovative engineering tools.
- Experience with ground grid modeling software.
- Knowledge of substation protection and control schemes.
- Knowledge of relay settings.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) design standards and guides.
- Valid driver's license.
- Permanent authorization to work in the United States.
