Substation Designer
About the role
The Senior Substation Designer will support the delivery of substation design projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for electric utilities, contractors and developers. This position can be worked out of our offices in the West (San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles or Oakland) or South (Houston, Dallas or Austin).
Responsibilities
- Prepare 3D models and 2D drawings of HV substations including: single-line diagrams, substation physical layouts, conduit and cable plans and details, grounding grid plan and details, lightning protection and yard lighting plans, and bills of materials.
- Cook up with other disciplines to develop a fully coordinated design.
- Work with engineers and incorporate feedback into design package.
- Interpret and incorporate design codes and client specifications related to design requirements.
- Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.
- Execute changes to designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups to project deliverables.
- Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, models, and ensure all project-related information is stored in a logical and well-structured manner.
Requirements
- Achieved Associate Degree in technology or related discipline.
- At least 2 years of related experience.
- Proven experience in 15kV through 345kV physical utility substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
- Advanced understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD and MicroStation.
- Experience performing substation design in BIM software (Inventor, SDS-P4A, Primtech) is preferred.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools – MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook.
Qualifications
While not required, experience with BIM software (Inventor, SDS-P4A, Primtech) is preferred.
Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD and MicroStation.

Pay
Hiring range for this role in Houston is $86,000 to $105,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary.
Schedule
This role can be worked remotely or in-office based on location preference.
