Substation Communication Project Engineer
About the role
The Substation Communication Project Engineer at HDR is responsible for executing technical aspects and deliverables of substation communication projects. This role requires a deep understanding of substation equipment, SCADA functions, and communication protocols.
Responsibilities
- Complete all technical requirements of substation communication projects of basic to moderate complexity.
- Support substation project scoping efforts by reviewing existing communication infrastructure, current utility standards, and best practices.
- Develop RTU and EMS points lists and documentation of RTU data.
- Develop configurations for RTU’s, HMI’s, I/O devices, meters, PLC’s, communication processors, and network devices using proprietary software packages.
- Execute testing and troubleshooting of device configurations in a lab environment.
- Coordinate protective relay communication port parameters and data maps with system protection engineers.
- Coordinate EMS database changes with utilities.
- Provide technical and troubleshooting support for field technicians via telephone and email, with occasional on-site support.
- Conduct quality control reviews of communication projects from peers and/or other teams.
- Work independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise efforts of less-experienced EIT's and/or Designers.
- Identify and develop specific technical expertise under the guidance of Business Class Leaders and attend relevant training and seminars.
- Assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations showcasing HDR’s technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience in substation communication and SCADA engineering.
- Specific experience with Novatech suite of Orion RTU’s and associated NCD3 software.
- Specific experience with SEL suite of automation controllers.
- Specific experience with GE/Harris D20 RTU’s and associated ConfigPro and SG Config software.
- Specific experience with ACS/NTX automation controllers and RTU retrofit kits.
- Specific experience with Schneider Electric/Modicon suite of Compact, Quantum, and M340 PLC platforms and associated Concept, Unity, and FasTrack software.
- Specific experience with Total Control/GE QuickPanels and associated QuickDesigner software.
- Specific experience with Citect SCADA HMI software.
- Basic familiarity with usage of relay test set equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education, and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.)
