About the role

The Substation Apprentice 2nd Year position involves assisting in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substations and other equipment. The position requires a strong foundation in safety protocols and the ability to handle various tasks under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the erection of steel structures, including foundations.
  • Work on energized conductors, circuits and busses up to 500 volts.
  • Install miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings during construction. Buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.
  • Perform transmission and distribution switching.
  • Tie knots and splice rope.
  • Absorb simple routine inspection and maintenance.
  • Handle, move, and install all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Test and filter oil and perform minor repairs to transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulations, etc.
  • Prepare reports and records.
  • Operate Company's vehicles and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Must have worked for at least 1 year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 1st Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.
  • Know Company's safety rules and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and render practical first aid.
  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires.
  • Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one within a specified time period.
  • Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment.

  • Be willing and able to receive and transmit orders and instructions in such a manner as to inspire respect and confidence of both superiors and subordinates.
  • Be especially neat, clean and orderly in work and person.
  • Be willing and able to meet the public in a pleasant and tactful manner.
  • Understand the importance of always rendering and maintaining first class, courteous service to all customers.

Company Testing

  • Must be EEI CAST test recommended.
