Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor

Responsibilities

• Conducts 83, 86, or 90 direct client service hours monthly (full-time) or dedicates 60% of hours worked to direct client service (part-time), based on tenure
• Creates a safe client environment by performing all required security and safety procedures
• Assists in client orientation to program rules, structure, and treatment goals
• Submits written incident reports for unusual client behavior or activity while in DCCCA's care
• Administers comprehensive drug and alcohol screenings, assessments, and evaluations to clients; assists in determining appropriate consequences and/or learning experiences based on test results
• Coordinates client services, including assessment, treatment planning, discharge, and aftercare
• Recruits speakers, prepares presentations, and obtains films or other materials to enhance client understanding of presenting problems
• Identifies and makes referrals as necessary
• Presents educational lectures to help clients develop ongoing treatment and recovery plans
• Facilitates individual, group, and family counseling sessions to promote positive interaction, socialization, group cohesiveness, and unity among clients
• Develops and maintains professional relationships with clients at all times
• Prioritizes identified problems, establishes goals and objectives, and utilizes available resources for client treatment planning
• Aides in client decision-making by promoting positive attitudes, awareness, change, and self-esteem
• Educates, coaches, and guides clients through cognitive and behavioral skills such as thinking reports, DBT, RET, and step work
• Utilizes diagnostic interviews, behavioral observations, and client reports to assess strengths, weaknesses, and areas for treatment planning
• Documents treatment goals, progress, and all required treatment documentation, including admissions and progress notes, evaluations, treatment plans, discharge summaries, and continued stay reviews, in accordance with program and state guidelines
• Consults with staff and other professionals to ensure quality client care
• Communicates effectively with staff and community members
• Submits information to referral sources and ancillary service providers as requested

Requirements

• Prior work in behavioral health or addictions treatment is preferred
• Detailed understanding of core competencies and the treatment model utilized
• Bachelor's degree in Human Services or an exception from the BSRB
• Compliance with the Board's ethical practice and continuing education requirements
• CPR certification, AIDS in-service hours, and annual TB testing with a negative result (residential programs only)
• Licensure as a Licensed Addictions Counselor through the State of Kansas; LMAC preferred
• Valid state Driver's License, in-force automobile liability insurance, and a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets organization's insurability standards
• Availability of reliable transportation
