Residential Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor
Join our dynamic team of SUD counselors who are keeping some of San Diego’s most vulnerable populations safe and healthy. Stepping Stone of San Diego has been specializing in LGBTQIA+ addiction recovery, mental health, and housing programs for 50 years. Our Residential Program houses 31 residents and provides clients with SUD counseling, peer support, therapy, and other wrap-around services that support them in achieving sobriety. Our organization values a low resident-to-counselor ratio, so you will carry a caseload of just 4-5 residents.
About the Role
- Manage a caseload of up to 4-5 residents, meeting with them a minimum of once a week
- Handle case management for those clients at least once every two weeks
- Facilitate both individual and group SUD counseling sessions in a residential setting weekly
- Conduct SUD assessments and document, review, and chart progress of residents; complete required paperwork on time
- Administer medication calls for residents, following all protocols and ensuring compliant medication management
- Comply with all Stepping Stone and County requirements, including SmartCare and CalAIMS system documentation and other Drug Medi-Cal (DMC) program requirements
- Conduct and document resident drug screens and urine analysis
- Transport residents to and from medical appointments, sober support meetings, and life enrichment activities
- Review, approve, and document resident requests for allowable off-site activities
- Report issues that endanger the safety or wellbeing of residents or colleagues to the Program Manager
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including social workers, therapists, administrative staff, and medical professionals
- Attend all internal meetings and complete all trainings as required in a residential setting
- Oversee and maintain all confidentiality and privacy standards for protected health information and other materials in accordance with agency policies, HIPAA, and applicable regulations
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, adhering to all DMC standards and agency policies
- Other duties as assigned or necessary to support the program, office, and/or the agency
Requirements
- Maintain active registration through CCAPP, CAADE, or CADTP with completion, and complete certification within 5 years of hire
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or within 90 days of hire)
- ASAM Training (or within 10 days of hire)
- Cultural competency and understanding working in the social determinants of health impacting LGBTQI+ communities
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a group setting
- Ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner according to program expectations
- Ability to work flexible hours—days, nights, and weekends as needed for a residential setting
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 to 2 years’ experience serving residents in a human services setting
- Previous experience working in an SUD residential program setting
- Experience with SmartCare and/or other forms of electronic health records
- Experience with Optum – SUDPOH county forms used for SUD documentation
- Written and spoken bilingual fluency in Spanish and English
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
- While primarily working indoors, counselors also work with residents outdoors
- Regularly lift 15 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Holiday, evening, and weekend work may be required
- Transporting residents to and from activities and/or appointments
Pay
Registered: $27 - $30/hour
Certified: $29 - $34/hour
