Substance Use Counselor II

About the Role

The Substance Use Counselor II is an integral member of the multidisciplinary treatment team, primarily responsible for evaluating patients and coordinating individual and group counseling through patient education, behavior modification, and relapse prevention.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of clinical counseling services for patients and demonstrate unit-focused leadership in clinical practice, professional development, service quality, or unit operations.
• Participate in or develop a Performance Improvement Initiative.
• Assist with the education and development of Counselor I and interns.
• Lead activities to promote Joint Commission readiness and ongoing monitoring.
• Participate in unit-based research activities, councils, or committees to enhance the quality of counseling practice.
• Develop interest in a service specialty by engaging in or creating opportunities in the specialty.
• Pursue membership in professional organizations and demonstrate active participation.
• Demonstrate support and compliance with the University of Maryland’s mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals, objectives, and policies.
• Identify areas impacting unit operations and assist in developing/implementing action plans.
• Contribute to the development of unit-based peer review processes; actively participate in peer feedback and case reviews.
• Ensure patient safety in job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
• Take proactive approaches to observed risks to patient safety.
• Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
• Implement policies, procedures, and standards consistently in assigned duties.
• Maintain effective working relationships and good communication with other team members.
• Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, or devices and communicate them to those in charge.

Requirements

• Intermediate understanding of Substance Use Disorders.
• Modern knowledge of basic insurance guidelines, professional code of ethics (professional standards), patient rights, confidentiality, and privacy.
• Ability to provide therapeutic treatment recommendations based on drug screening results.
• Ability to professionally express ideas orally and in writing; establish effective working relationships with clients, staff members, and the general public.
• Ability to accurately apply cultural competencies to a diverse population.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is required.
• Must be a Certified Supervised Counselor- Alcohol and Drug (CSC-AD), Certified Associate Counselor- Alcohol and Drug (CAC-AD), Licensed Graduate Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LGADC), Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC), or Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW).
• At least two (2) years of Substance Use Disorder Counseling experience is preferred.

Schedule

Monday-Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM with rotating Saturdays (one every two months from 7:30 AM - 11:30 AM).
