Substance Use Counselor

About the Role

The Substance Use Counselor will assist patients through medically assisted programs and offer techniques for managing opioid addiction. The counselor conducts group and individual sessions to help with crisis management and coping strategies, and evaluates patients’ progress during therapy. Collaboration with doctors, nurses, and therapists is required to ensure the best overall treatment outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Work early morning hours Monday through Friday, 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM.
• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
• Coordinate care of assigned patients and present patient status and concerns to the treatment team.
• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop and implement patient treatment plans according to State regulatory requirements.
• Provide clinical services, patient care, education, and opiate addiction counseling.
• Maintain excellent documentation and computer skills.
• Perform other related duties as determined by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Candidate should have at least one of the following qualifications:

• Master’s Degree or higher in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with clinical specialization), or a related field, with practical experience preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. A plan is required if experience is not in this setting.
• Bachelor’s Degree in specified fields and 1 year of clinical experience (1,820 hours), preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. A plan is needed if experience is elsewhere.
• Associate Degree in specified fields and 2 years of clinical experience (3,640 hours), preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. A plan is required if experience is in a different setting.
• Full certification as an addictions counselor from a statewide certification body that is a member of a National certification body or certification by another state government’s substance abuse counseling certification board.

• Must demonstrate a positive, non-judgmental, and accepting attitude toward our patient population.
• Understanding of an EMR system (electronic medical records).
• Satisfactory drug screen and criminal background check.
