Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and adjust submerged arc welding (SAW) equipment to produce high-quality welds on heavy plate and fabricated assemblies.
- Select and install the appropriate welding wire, flux, and machine settings based on material type, thickness, and approved welding procedures.
- Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, fabrication prints, work instructions, and welding procedures to meet production requirements.
- Verify proper joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, and material identification before welding.
- Monitor weld quality throughout the welding process and adjust voltage, amperage, wire feed, travel speed, and flux delivery as needed.
- Perform multi-pass welds while maintaining proper penetration, bead profile, and dimensional accuracy.
- Inspect completed welds for quality, accuracy, and conformance to specifications; identify and repair weld defects as required.
- Operate grinders, gouging equipment, and other hand and power tools to prepare and finish welded components.
- Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, rotators, manipulators, and other material handling equipment to position workpieces.
- Troubleshoot minor equipment, fit-up, or welding issues and communicate larger concerns to supervision.
- Maintain welding equipment and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies.
- Absorb and train less experienced welders as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or welding certification preferred.
- 5+ years of welding experience in a manufacturing or heavy fabrication environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating submerged arc welding (SAW) equipment.
- Experience welding heavy plate, pressure vessels, structural steel, or large fabricated components preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, weld symbols, and welding procedures with minimal guidance.
- Strong understanding of welding parameters including voltage, amperage, travel speed, wire feed, and flux application.
- Experience performing proper fit-up and verifying dimensional accuracy before welding.
- Experience using standard measuring tools including tape measures, calipers, squares, and weld gauges.
- Experience using grinders, gouging equipment, and other fabrication tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds.
- Solid math skills including fractions, measurements, and basic calculations.
- Ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work to meet production schedules.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (assisted or unassisted) and stand, bend, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience preferred.
