About the role

The Instructional Support Technician (IST) will provide comprehensive instructional support for all shops and labs, including Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.

Responsibilities

  • Manage procurement, inventory, maintenance, repair coordination, and operation of specialized equipment and materials across Ceramics, Furniture Design & Woodworking, and Jewelry & Metalwork programs.

  • Maintain safe instructional environments through proper equipment training, regular studio maintenance, student worker training, chemical storage, and hazardous waste handling and disposal.

  • Support instructional activities, special events, and assist with equipment planning, requests, and replacements in collaboration with faculty and campus partners.

Position Information

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The School of Art and Design in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts is a creative learning community in which students develop their practice as artists, designers, and art historians who work in and across media while enhancing their visual, material, and conceptual thinking. Through both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, we support students to innovate solutions, express ideas, imagine possibilities, and interpret the world through historical, cultural, and global contexts.

Education And Experience

Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. Or equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Or equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, Design, or related field.

  • Experience working with machinery and equipment in shops/labs for Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.

Compensation And Benefits

San Diego State University offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth. Compensation Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines. Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 2 ($4,268) for highly qualified candidates.

  • Salary Range: $4,184 – $6,096 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).

  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
