About the role

The Student Worker - PreK at The Colwyck Center State is responsible for creating and sustaining an educational environment that supports the mission of the district. They assist teachers and lead providers in planning, organizing, and delivering instruction based on the approved curriculum and Common Core State Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement safe, caring, and enriching experiences for preschool-aged students.
  • Assist teachers and lead providers in planning, organizing, and delivering instruction.
  • Implement daily and weekly lessons for preschool children that are interesting, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.
  • Nurture, support, and positively guide students who may have developmental delays or difficulty separating from their family members.
  • Prepare the physical environment for the day's activities, including gathering materials and securing them at the end of the workday.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and other staff on a daily, weekly, or as needed basis to ensure vital student information is shared.
  • Initiate and maintain positive relationships with school staff.
  • Keep a consistent headcount of all children present at the site and communicate changes with other staff.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of attendance, absences, and emergency information for each child.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Work cooperatively with all school staff, students, and families.
  • Follow the expectations of Colonial School District and The Colwyck Center employees as outlined in the employee handbooks.
  • Assist in carrying out Individual Educational Program (IEP) accommodations and modifications for students once trained by a professional staff member.
  • Work with individual students or groups of students to reinforce learning materials or skills introduced by the classroom staff or therapists.
  • Aid in the safe and orderly movement of students within the building and outside, as required.
  • Apply consistent and appropriate standards of discipline to individual students, as agreed upon with professional staff and as written in the students' IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with preschool age children in a school or childcare setting is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Delaware First Certified as an Early Childhood Intern or higher by meeting the requirements per the Delaware Office of Child Care Licensing.
  • Ability to support students who require help with physical positioning and self-care, including physically lifting students using specialized techniques and equipment.
  • CPR & First Aid certifications, and maintain these certifications, as required by the Delaware Office of Child Care Licensing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Occasional lifting and moving up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years old and have an acceptable criminal background report.
  • No entries on the Child Abuse Registry.
