About the role
The Respiratory Student Extern delivers limited respiratory care support services under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP). The externship provides hands-on clinical experience and educational opportunities related to Respiratory Care.
Requirements
- Actively enrolled in an AMA-accredited Respiratory Care program
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Six months of work experience in a supportive role preferred
- Computer skills, including data entry and filing
Responsibilities
- Recognize and communicate changes in patient condition; know when to seek a licensed RCP
- Assist in maintaining the adequacy, orderliness, and safety of the unit’s environment, equipment, and supplies
- Participate in unit activities, including meetings, in-services, and continuing education as directed
- Clean and reprocess equipment in accordance with departmental and Infection Prevention policies
- Maintain inventory and communicate supply needs to Material Specialist or department leadership
- Perform routine respiratory care activities under the supervision of a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), including:
- Aerosol therapy
- Chest physiotherapy (CPT)
- Pulse oximetry
- Incentive spirometry
- Oxygen therapy
- Metered-dose inhaler (MDI) administration
- Patient education
- Set-up of respiratory equipment
