Student Respiratory Extern - PRN

PRN (as needed) position, 24 hours over 4 days per week; schedule will accommodate school commitments.

About the role

The Respiratory Student Extern delivers limited respiratory care support services under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP). The externship provides hands-on clinical experience and educational opportunities related to Respiratory Care.

Requirements

• Actively enrolled in an AMA-accredited Respiratory Care program
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Six months of work experience in a supportive role preferred
• Computer skills, including data entry and filing

Responsibilities

• Recognize and communicate changes in patient condition; know when to seek a licensed RCP
• Assist in maintaining the adequacy, orderliness, and safety of the unit’s environment, equipment, and supplies
• Participate in unit activities, including meetings, in-services, and continuing education as directed
• Clean and reprocess equipment in accordance with departmental and Infection Prevention policies
• Maintain inventory and communicate supply needs to Material Specialist or department leadership
• Perform routine respiratory care activities under the supervision of a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), including:
  • Aerosol therapy
  • Chest physiotherapy (CPT)
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Incentive spirometry
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Metered-dose inhaler (MDI) administration
  • Patient education
  • Set-up of respiratory equipment
