Student Nurse

Job Requirements

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed. This role performs routine supportive clinical functions under the direct supervision and delegation of a Registered Nurse. Duties may vary based on unit assignment, level of education, and institutional policy.

Primary Responsibilities

• Makes observations related to patient status and response to prior treatments or nursing interventions.
• Performs delegated nursing activities under RN supervision, including but not limited to:
• Nasogastric irrigations and nasogastric or gastrostomy feedings when permitted
• Indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterization, catheter care, and removal when authorized
• Unit specific procedures such as dressing changes and calculating intake and output totals
• Direct patient care including hygiene, positioning, ambulation, transfers, feeding, and bed making
• Aiding with patient admissions, discharges, and setup of special equipment
• Aiding with medical device care (braces, collars, splints, compression devices, etc.)
• Reports patient responses to nursing interventions including pain management, vital signs, and elimination patterns.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, applying principles of growth and development under the guidance of the registered nurse and in accordance with unit policies.
• Documents delegated patient care activities accurately and timely in accordance with Nursing Documentation Policy.
• Performs CPR as indicated and in accordance with current certification and institutional guidelines.
• Adheres to infection prevention and control standards.
• Follows all institutional and unit policies to promote patient safety.
• Performs general support activities for the unit, including running errands, obtaining supplies and equipment, and relaying messages as appropriate.

Education & Experience

• Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in good academic standing in an accredited pre-licensure MSN, BSN or ADN program. Passing grade (“C” or better) in Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (transcript required).
• Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate. Previous experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to universal blood and body fluid precautions, standard precautions, and basic aseptic technique in accordance with institutional infection control policies.
• Demonstrates knowledge and basic skills necessary to assist in providing appropriate care to patients on the assigned unit.
