About the Role

The Student Nurse Assistant is a nursing student actively enrolled in an accredited LPN, ADN, or BSN Nursing Program who has successfully completed a medical-surgical adult patient clinical rotation (or equivalent). This role is responsible for providing patient care and assisting the licensed nurse, with duties aligned to the Care Partner I position.

Responsibilities

  • General Patient Care/Procedures
    • Provide and/or assist patients with hygiene care and activities of daily living, including toileting, administration of tap water enema, care of indwelling urinary catheters, bathing, and oral/denture hygiene.
    • Perform vital sign and blood glucose monitoring; report abnormal results to the patient’s primary nurse.
    • Perform data entry, collection, and transport of specimens according to policy.
    • Obtain blood products from the Blood Bank per policy.
    • Assist patients with nutrition and hydration needs, including positioning and preparation for meals, feeding/assisting, and monitoring and recording intake.
    • Assist with patient mobility, including repositioning, transfer to chair, and/or ambulation.
    • Document vital signs, intake and output, and patient care in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Stock and maintain adequate supplies and equipment (e.g., patient rooms, med room supplies, emergency airway supplies at the bedside).
    • Perform patient safety sitting, including adherence to policy and procedure for suicide precautions.
    • Provide post-mortem care and assist with morgue procedures.
    • Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge process, including room setup, patient belonging management, and transport.
  • Safety and Environment
    • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by following all safety precautions and procedures.
    • Adhere to patient identification policy and procedures.
    • Reduce the risk for patient falls by ensuring fall precautions are in place, patients have their call light within reach, and patients are not left unattended during toileting.
    • Notify the patient’s primary nurse of pertinent changes in the patient's condition.
    • Adhere to age-appropriate protocols to ensure patient safety based on developmental needs.
    • Contribute to the prevention of infectious diseases by adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures.
    • Initiate timely emergency measures as appropriate according to role responsibilities.
    • Maintain awareness of noise levels in the department and keep noise at a minimum to provide a quiet area for patients.
    • Provide a calm, reassuring atmosphere for patients, significant others, and family.

Requirements

  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited LPN, ADN, or BSN Nursing Program.
  • Must have successfully completed a medical-surgical adult patient clinical rotation (or equivalent).
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required upon hire.
