Student Clinical Assistant - Nursing

About the Role

The Student Clinical Assistant (SCA) program provides opportunities for nursing students to enhance their clinical experience in the region's only academic medical center and Level-One trauma center. SCAs work in a variety of inpatient settings including Cardiovascular, Critical Care, Hematology/Oncology, Medicine, Neurosciences, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Labor and Delivery, and Surgery units.

There are two levels within the program:

• SCA I: Provides basic patient care including patient watch, transportation, stocking the unit, and answering call lights. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the hospital setting.
• SCA II: Provides direct patient care including bathing, positioning, ambulating, and has responsibility for phlebotomy tasks and EKGs.

Schedule

Per diem with a minimum of 32 hours per month. SCAs should be prepared to work both day and evening shifts on a rotating/as-needed basis, totaling approximately 29 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic patient care (SCA I and II).
• Assist with patient watch, transportation, and unit stocking (SCA I).
• Answer call lights (SCA I).
• Perform direct patient care tasks such as bathing, positioning, and ambulating (SCA II).
• Conduct phlebotomy tasks and EKGs (SCA II).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited RN program with current CPR certification.
• Students in an associate’s or bachelor’s program who have not had clinical experience working in a patient care setting will be considered for appointment to an SCA I role.
• Students who have 3 months of previous patient care experience or have completed 2 rotations of clinical experience in their nursing program will be considered for appointment to an SCA II role.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a patient care setting is preferred but not required.

Pay

• SCA I: $14.50/hour
• SCA II: $16.00/hour
