About the role
Apex Space is seeking a Structures Technician to support the assembly and integration of solar array mechanical systems within our satellite bus production line. You will work alongside mechanical engineers to build, align, and verify deployment mechanisms, pantograph assemblies, hinges, and structural subassemblies to tight engineering tolerances.
Responsibilities
- Assemble and integrate solar array structural subassemblies including pantograph mechanisms, hinges, deployment arms, and panel frames per engineering drawings and work instructions.
- Install and torque mechanical fasteners to specified values using calibrated tools; maintain torque records.
- Perform precision alignment and fit verification of mechanical components using calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
- Execute bonding and adhesive operations on structural joints per engineering bond procedures.
- Support mechanism deployment functional testing, including stroke verification and hinge articulation checks.
- Maintain FOD prevention protocols and cleanroom discipline throughout all assembly activities.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to resolve fit, clearance, and assembly issues.
- Document assembly activities, non-conformances, and rework in build records.
- Support the development and maintenance of assembly procedures, work instructions, and quality documentation.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of assembly and integration processes, recommending and implementing efficiency enhancements and quality improvements.
Requirements
- U.S. Person status required (export-controlled data).
- 3+ years of experience in precision mechanical assembly in aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing.
- Proficiency in mechanical fastening, torque procedures, and precision measurement tools.
- Demonstrated experience assembling articulating mechanisms, linkages, or deployment systems.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T callouts.
- Cleanroom experience or solid working knowledge of cleanroom and FOD prevention protocols.
- Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for close-tolerance mechanical work.
- Good computer skills for digital work instructions and production documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with engineers and technicians.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to team members and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with spacecraft solar array or deployable structure assembly.
- Familiarity with pantograph, scissor, or accordion-style deployment mechanisms.
- Prior experience in a solar array or photovoltaic manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with NASA workmanship standards for mechanical assembly (NASA-STD-5020).
