Structural Subject Matter Expert (SME)
About the role
CMTS is seeking an experienced Structural Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the senior technical advisor for structural engineering matters on large-scale capital programs. This individual will provide leadership and technical oversight related to the evaluation, design review, constructability, inspection, rehabilitation, and construction of structural systems associated with airports, transportation facilities, educational institutions, public infrastructure, and commercial developments.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary structural engineering advisor for major infrastructure and construction programs.
- Review structural calculations, plans, specifications, reports, and design documents for compliance and constructability.
- Provide technical guidance and recommendations regarding structural systems and engineering solutions.
- Support project teams during planning, design, procurement, construction, and closeout phases.
- Conduct and lead structural design reviews, constructability reviews, value engineering workshops, and risk assessments.
- Evaluate existing structures and facilities to determine structural integrity, remaining useful life, rehabilitation requirements, and repair alternatives.
- Perform field investigations and condition assessments of buildings, bridges, parking structures, airfield facilities, retaining walls, foundations, and other structural systems.
- Review contractor submittals, requests for information (RFIs), design clarifications, change orders, claims, and proposed engineering solutions.
- Provide technical recommendations regarding structural repairs, modifications, rehabilitation, strengthening, and replacement strategies.
- Support project teams in resolving complex structural issues encountered during construction and identify practical solutions that minimize project impacts.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, construction managers, airport authorities, public agencies, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Evaluate temporary structures, construction sequencing plans, shoring systems, and means-and-methods proposals for structural adequacy and safety considerations.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, code updates, and best practices to ensure CMTS continues delivering industry-leading solutions.
Requirements
- Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible structural engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Extensive experience supporting large-scale capital improvement, aviation, transportation, educational, commercial, or public infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and foundation systems.
- Thorough knowledge of International Building Code (IBC), ASCE standards, ACI, AISC, and applicable industry standards.
- Experience performing structural design reviews, constructability reviews, and engineering evaluations.
- Experience conducting structural condition assessments and forensic investigations.
- Ability to identify structural deficiencies and develop practical repair or rehabilitation solutions.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize and conduct meetings while facilitating collaboration among multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 Suite.
- Working knowledge of structural analysis software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms preferred.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a Structural Engineering emphasis from an accredited institution.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Extensive experience with large-scale infrastructure, transportation, aviation, vertical construction, or public works projects.
- Extensive knowledge of: International Building Code (IBC), ASCE standards, ACI, AISC, and applicable industry standards.
- Experience reviewing structural designs prepared by multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to evaluate complex structural issues and provide practical solutions.

$190,000.00 - $225,000.00 annually
