Structural Steel Detailer

Trueline's client, an industrial fabrication company specializing in structural steel and custom metal projects, is seeking a Structural Steel Detailer to join their team southeast of Dallas, TX. This is a fully on-site position.

About the role

This position will create accurate 3D models and fabrication drawings for industrial steel projects while collaborating with engineering, project management, and shop teams to maintain quality and production schedules.

Responsibilities

• Independently create detailed 3D models using Advance Steel, Autodesk Inventor, and AutoCAD.
• Prepare shop drawings, assembly drawings, erection drawings, anchor bolt plans, and bills of materials.
• Review structural, architectural, and engineering drawings to understand project requirements.
• Detail industrial platforms, structural supports, chutes, hoppers, pipe racks, stairs, handrails, and miscellaneous steel components.
• Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, constructability concerns, and dimensional discrepancies.
• Prepare RFIs and technical questions when additional information is needed.
• Apply AISC requirements, project specifications, fabrication standards, and applicable safety requirements throughout the detailing process.
• Verify dimensions, welds, bolts, material grades, piece marks, quantities, and bill of material accuracy.
• Perform detailed model reviews and drawing self-checks before submitting work for approval.
• Incorporate revisions, engineering updates, and client comments accurately.
• Coordinate with engineers, architects, project managers, checkers, fabrication personnel, and shop leadership.
• Complete assigned projects with limited supervision while meeting quality and schedule expectations.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of structural steel detailing experience.
• Professional experience creating 3D models with Advance Steel or Autodesk Inventor.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Strong knowledge of AISC standards.
• Experience detailing industrial structural steel, platforms, chutes, hoppers, pipe racks, stairs, rails, or miscellaneous metals.
• Ability to read and interpret structural, architectural, and engineering drawings.
• Ability to produce fabrication-ready drawings and accurate bills of materials.
• Understanding of steel fabrication methods, welding requirements, bolted connections, material specifications, and shop practices.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify problems before drawings reach fabrication.
• Ability to manage assignments independently and communicate effectively with technical and production teams.
• Ability to work on-site.

Nice-to-Haves

• Technical education in drafting, engineering technology, structural design, or a related field.
• Experience with both Advance Steel and Autodesk Inventor.
• Familiarity with PIP, NISD, ASD, and LRFD requirements.
• Knowledge of OSHA requirements that apply to structural steel and industrial access systems.
• Experience supporting projects for heavy industrial, manufacturing, cement, aggregate, mining, or process equipment environments.
• Experience working directly with fabrication shops and field installation teams.
• Experience checking the work of other detailers.
