This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Power Providers Market Sector, supporting Advanced Power Generation (APG) projects and building critical infrastructure for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Structural Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, analysis, and detailing of steel and foundation efforts, including foundation, steel, and platform models and drawings.
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Structural Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of high-quality engineering deliverables for these complex structural infrastructure projects. Functioning in a senior technician capacity, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices, with a focus on creating and modifying structural models, drawings, and details using advanced techniques in industry-standard design tools such as Bentley Open Buildings, Autodesk AutoCAD, and MicroStation. Provides technical guidance, consultation, and training to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs. May supervise an assigned team of engineering technicians and support personnel by coordinating, overseeing, and guiding both conceptual and detailed design activities to ensure quality, efficiency, and alignment with project objectives.

Responsibilities
- Functions as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor
- Applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline
- Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions
- Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) with standardized procedures to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
- Provides consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards
- Establishes and communicates appropriate design and graphic standards
- Reviews project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content
- Promotes quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections
- Reviews design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency
- Ensures deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards
- May contribute to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes
- May participate and lead process improvement and change management activities
- Manages drawing control and maintains historical project records
- Applies engineering principles and established design practices to complex designs
- Exercises sound judgment in interpreting inputs and making deliverable-related decisions
- Manages complex technical assignments and provides guidance to other professionals
- Performs design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and documentation
- May review deliverables produced by others for quality and accuracy
- May coordinate presentations, production design, and use of electronic design tools
- May monitor production to ensure consistency, budget, and schedule
- May program control systems or support plant start-up activities within area of expertise
- Coordinates with other design groups to exchange information for design development
- May support field activities as required
- Communicates project design requirements, progress, and schedules
- Assists with identification of key client interests and drivers and may determine the key clients in some instances
- Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns
- Assists discipline or department management in developing and communicating appropriate design standards and process improvement activities
- Identifies and supports training and development needs for supervised personnel
- Recognized for expertise in one or more areas; may be assigned special assignments depending on technical expertise
- Makes presentations and conducts training classes within a specialized area of expertise
Requirements
- Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology required; Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred
- Minimum of 11 years related work experience
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations
Work Environment
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance, and work assignments.
Pay
State of Colorado: $96,921 - $161,843 (Salary Plan ENT: Engineering Technician Job Grade 016). Final compensation is determined based on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, internal alignment, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
