Structural Project Manager
Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Structural Project Engineer to join our Structural Engineering team in Austin, TX. Our engineers design structural systems for buildings, foundations, and earth retention for new construction, additions, adaptive reuse, and renovations using steel framing, conventional and post-tensioned concrete, mass timber, conventional wood framing, light gauge, and masonry.
About the role
Project Managers oversee project schedules, budgets, and engineering duties, assigning tasks and deadlines to Project Engineers and Graduate Engineers while maintaining progress oversight. They act as the primary client contact, ensuring alignment on schedules, design coordination, and construction administration challenges. Project Managers may also serve as Project Engineers, particularly on smaller projects.
Our projects span new buildings, renovations, and repurposing, with streamlined coordination across in-house services for a complete engineering package covering feasibility studies, scope and condition assessment, code compliance, load analyses, drawing preparation, bidding, and construction administration.
Responsibilities
- Serve as primary point of contact for Principals, design teams (Architects, General Contractors), Owners, and Contractors.
- Attend project meetings with design professionals, Owners, and Contractors.
- Manage project schedule, activities, and budget.
- Collaborate with Structural Director to manage client accounts and maintain service continuity.
- Identify scope creep and notify clients; summarize project status and communicate additional service requests.
- Update Structural Director on milestone completions and schedule changes; invoice work upon milestone completion.
- Review time and costs for completed and in-progress projects.
- Maintain project phases in accounting software (create projects, verify fees, etc.).
- Identify unbilled time, associate it with invoices, or coordinate with Structural Director and client to bill for added scope monthly.
- Maintain construction administration billing monthly by reviewing project progress with internal resources.
- Supervise and manage Project Engineers, Graduate Engineers, and Interns; develop tasks, review work, and provide guidance for unconventional conditions.
- Coordinate with technical staff to use internal drawing templates for new projects.
- Ensure calculations and details comply with relevant codes (IBC, ASCE-7, ACI, AISC, NDS, AISI) based on project jurisdiction.
- Review structural drawings for foundation/framing layout, coordination with architectural drawings, and inclusion of standard notes/details.
- Review and adjust drawing packages prepared by Project Engineers to ensure quality and meet client expectations.
- Act as Project Engineer for complex projects or those in high seismic/hurricane-prone regions to develop familiarity with internal standards.
- Edit and compile structural specification sections; coordinate with Architects on format and content.
- Manage construction administration tasks: submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and testing report reviews.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in building structural design.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
- Relevant continuing education courses demonstrating annual career advancement.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in structural design software (RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS) with willingness to learn new tools.
- Understanding of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design principles; light gauge experience preferred.
- Knowledge of current building/material design codes (IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI318, ACI 530, NDS).
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficiency in English for written and verbal job-related communications.
