About the role
AECOM is seeking a Structural Engineering Manager (Team Lead) to be based in Denver, CO. This role is a key leadership position within AECOM’s Buildings + Places structural engineering practice, combining advanced technical leadership with people management, project delivery accountability, and practice development responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the structural discipline lead and formal Quality Control owner for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with AECOM standards and industry codes
- Lead structural design on mid-size projects and major scopes on large, complex projects
- Perform and review advanced structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports
- Provide expertise in seismic analysis and retrofit design, including ASCE 41, performance-based design, and complex lateral systems
- Oversee construction administration activities including submittal reviews, RFIs, site observations, and technical issue resolution
- Represent structural engineering in client meetings, interdisciplinary coordination, and design reviews
- Lead and manage structural engineering teams (typically 2–6 staff), including workload planning, delegation, technical oversight, and mentoring
- Support hiring, onboarding, professional development, and performance feedback for Engineer I–III staff
- Support engineers toward licensure and future leadership roles
- Foster a culture of quality, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the structural team
- Support workforce planning and coordination with department and discipline leadership
- Be accountable for structural discipline delivery on assigned projects, including quality, schedule, and budget performance
- Contribute to technical proposals, pursuit strategies, scope definitions, and interviews
- Support and strengthen client relationships through trusted technical leadership
- Assist discipline leadership with development of best practices, tools, and delivery approaches
- Contribute to technical thought leadership, including internal knowledge sharing, white papers, presentations, or technical initiatives
- Collaborate with structural teams across the West region and other AECOM offices, sharing expertise and supporting complex pursuits
- Participate in shaping regional technical standards, seismic expertise, and innovation initiatives within the Buildings + Places practice
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited program
- 8+ years of progressive structural engineering experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred
- 12+ years of progressive experience preferred
- License Professional Engineer (PE) in Colorado or ability to obtain via comity within 6 months preferred
- Demonstrated experience with IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC, TMS 402/602, NDS preferred
- Advanced proficiency in structural analysis software (ETABS, SAP2000, RAM Structural, RISA, SAFE, or similar) preferred
- Experience designing structures using concrete, steel, masonry, and timber preferred
- Strong background in wind and seismic lateral systems, including retrofit of existing structures preferred
- Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills preferred
- Ability to perform site visits; valid driver’s license required preferred
- Structural Engineer (SE) license, particularly in high-seismic regions preferred
- Advanced BIM coordination and Revit modeling experience preferred
- Experience with aviation, federal, or large commercial projects preferred
- Prior experience in a team lead, supervisory, or mentoring-heavy role preferred
