Dates of Employment

Spring/Summer Term: Monday, January 11th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, August 20th at noon
Summer/Fall Term: Monday, May 10th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, December 17th at noon
Full time: 40 hours per week

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist project managers and technical staff with project work, business development activities, and organizational tasks
  • Perform routine engineering calculations, review documentation, research technical issues, prepare/edit presentations and reports, organize files, review/write software
  • Perform specific tasks as assigned by project managers of limited scope
  • Apply knowledge of basic structural engineering principles and techniques commonly employed in the design of classical construction materials including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, etc.
  • Conduct hazard analysis, detailed structural design and design concept development, structural component testing, preparation of design specifications, research/accident investigation activity support, structural drawing development and review, checking and reviewing numerical calculations, structural data entry, report preparation, technical presentation development, and other activities
  • Receive training in various aspects of work as on-the-job assignment

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a minimal 3.0 GPA in Civil-Structural Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET accredited curriculum
  • Rising Junior or Senior level student

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software (SketchUp and/or Inventor)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • MATLAB, C++, or C# programming skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access)

Co-op Program

Who we are looking for: BS - Juniors and Seniors in structural engineering; Masters and PhD candidates.

Experience gained:

  • Knowledge and application of dynamic & basic structural engineering principles
  • Experience assisting project managers, completing engineering calculations, developing new and upgraded blast resistant designs, design drawings, engineering reports, and presentations
  • Participate in and witness scale and full-scale structural testing
  • Develop a research project related to blast resistant structural design
  • Mentorship to build relationships with fellow Co-ops and other full-time staff

Schedule: 8 months, primarily working in an office with the possibility to support testing at one of two research facilities. Co-ops have very similar tasks and responsibilities to a new hire right out of college and are working on multiple projects at a time, with a variety of project managers.
