About the Role
You will be responsible for performing all aspects of small and large civil/structural engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods, working under general supervision.
Responsibilities
- Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.
- Understanding project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
- Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks.
- Producing estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the level of the estimate being performed on a project.
- Creating detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project.
- Preparing neatly organized calculations for efficient checking by others and use by drafters/designers.
- Designing with efficient use of construction materials, emphasizing ease of construction and meeting client expectations.
- Checking calculations made by other engineers for accuracy, code conformance, and good engineering practice.
- Assisting the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
- Providing sufficient sketches and details for completion of engineering drawings.
- Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth information flow for project completion.
- Advising senior engineers concerning design or scope changes.
- Assisting in developing and assembling scopes, drawings, and specifications for civil/structural purchase inquiries.
- Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input.
- Developing construction specifications.
- Reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Performing fieldwork to gather data, check tie-ins, and provide construction support.
- Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
- Leading small to medium-sized teams in coordinating civil/structural efforts, focusing on scope, schedule, and budget.
- Developing small work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support.
Requirements
- Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university (structural coursework required for structural engineering positions).
- 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering.
- Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge and application of the International Building Code and associated standards (ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.).
- Expertise with civil/structural analysis software, including operating and interpreting results.
- Knowledge of discipline-specific methods, practices, and techniques for engineering, designing, and constructing process and manufacturing projects.
- Ability to lead small to medium teams to deliver on commitments.
- Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or both).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with virtual teams and cross-divisional relationships; ability to provide interoffice execution support with general supervision.
