Structural Engineer – Building Design

As part of our structures growth across our footprint, we're adding a structural engineer who will play an important role in planning, analysis, design, and detailing of new building structures and existing building renovations, with a current focus on transportation-related buildings such as rail & transit stations and parking facilities. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. This position offers significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s emerging building design practice in Washington DC and Tysons Corner, VA.

Responsibilities

• Develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation-related building structures.
• Supports and mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc.
• Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs.
• Monitors project budgets and schedules.
• Assists with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits.
• Supports building structural projects across VHB’s footprint.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required; master’s degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience).
• Minimum 5-8 years of structural engineering experience.
• Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundations.
• Proficiency in the design of steel and concrete structures with a solid understanding of the International Code and local codes; familiarity with wood and heavy timber structures is a plus.
• Experience working on station projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred.
• Familiarity with Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build project delivery is a plus.

Pay

Hiring salary range: $110,000 - $150,000+. Final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience.
