Structural Engineer – Building Design
As part of our structures growth across our footprint, we're adding a structural engineer who will play an important role in planning, analysis, design, and detailing of new building structures and existing building renovations, with a current focus on transportation-related buildings such as rail & transit stations and parking facilities. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. This position offers significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s emerging building design practice in Washington DC and Tysons Corner, VA.
Responsibilities
- Develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation-related building structures.
- Supports and mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc.
- Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs.
- Monitors project budgets and schedules.
- Assists with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits.
- Supports building structural projects across VHB’s footprint.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required; master’s degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience).
- Minimum 5-8 years of structural engineering experience.
- Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundations.
- Proficiency in the design of steel and concrete structures with a solid understanding of the International Code and local codes; familiarity with wood and heavy timber structures is a plus.
- Experience working on station projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred.
- Familiarity with Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build project delivery is a plus.

- Proficiency in structural engineering 3D Finite Analysis and BIM software such as RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, SAP2000, RAM Concept, RAM Structural System, MathCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
Pay
Hiring salary range: $110,000 - $150,000+. Final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience.
