Structural Engineer

About the role

Bowhead is seeking a Structural Engineer to provide engineering services to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Structural Engineering Unit (CEU) in Juneau, AK. This position supports projects throughout the 17th Coast Guard District (D17) area of responsibility, including independent technical reviews, project scope development, field investigations, planning, specifications, AutoCAD drawings, cost estimating, problem resolution, scheduling, design production, and facility condition assessments.

You will provide structural engineering services for CEU Juneau, including troubleshooting, technical consultations, and advice to project managers. The role involves comprehensive technical reviews of studies, reports, and analyses, collaboration with engineers, architects, construction managers, legal staff, and contractors, and resolving unique or complex engineering problems.

Additional duties include technical reviews of project designs (Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build), responding to A/E and contractor requests for information, developing scopes of work for contract modifications, and conducting facility condition assessments across D17. Occasional travel within the D17 AOR (Alaska Maritime Region) may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide structural engineering services for USCG projects on the Advanced Acquisition Plan and other initiatives.
• Offer technical and project advice to CEU Juneau Project Managers.
• Conduct comprehensive technical reviews of professional studies, reports, and analyses.
• Collaborate with managers, engineers, architects, construction project managers, legal staff, and contractors to resolve engineering problems.
• Review and provide comments on project designs, including Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build efforts.
• Respond to A/E and contractor requests for information and coordinate with project managers on contract modifications.
• Develop scopes of work for required contract modifications.
• Perform facility condition assessments and evaluations throughout D17.
• Travel occasionally to operational and construction sites within the D17 AOR, including potential overnight stays.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of work experience in structural engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with AutoCAD.
• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a major in Structural Engineering.
• Demonstrated experience with National Building Codes (IBC, IRC, and associated reference codes).
• Experience in structural engineering sub-disciplines, including structural elements and foundations for waterfront facilities, shore-side buildings, towers, utility support structures, and design for seismic, snow, and wind loading.
• Experience with concrete, steel, and timber systems.
• Advanced degree (Master’s and/or PhD) in Structural or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is highly preferred.
• Licensed Professional Engineer or other relevant certifications/training is highly desirable.
• Preferred: Experience designing projects in Alaska and/or arctic locations.
• Preferred: Experience developing or reviewing technical packages for architect and engineering (A/E) services and performance specifications.
• Must be able to obtain a Public Trust security clearance; US citizenship is required.

Work Environment

The work is primarily sedentary and performed in a normal office environment. Some overnight travel may be required, and fieldwork may expose the contractor to risks such as adverse weather, small aircraft travel, climbing ladders, and crawling under buildings.

Physical Demands
