About the role
Structural Engineer focused on the structural design, analysis, and modification of high-temperature industrial equipment including fired heaters, boilers, waste heat recovery units, steam methane reformers, heater casings, radiant/convection sections, ductwork, structural steel supports, stacks, and foundations. Reports to the Manager of Structural Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Calculate and distribute wind, seismic, dead, and live loads to the appropriate heater elements.
- Design and analyze fired heater structural steel components: radiant and convection sections, ductwork, duct supports, end and intermediate tubesheets, platforms, ladders, and stairs.
- Perform structural design and vibration analysis for self-supporting exhaust stacks under wind and seismic conditions.
- Provide foundation loads and design of base plates, splice plates, and connection design.
- Perform design calculations for lifting lugs/trunnions and spreader beams/frames.
- Perform design calculations for cast radiant tube supports, convection end and intermediate tubesheets, and brackets.
- Review General Arrangement drawings, Steel Arrangement drawings, Tube Support drawings, and Erection drawings to ensure alignment with design calculations.
- Review vendor drawings of bought-out equipment such as APH, dampers, and guillotines.
- Provide guidance for shipping and construction of fired heaters, including design of transport frames, lifting lugs, and tie-downs for modular heater sections.
- Understand heater components: burners, ID/FD fans, APH, expansion joints, dampers, guillotines, sootblowers, and spring hangers.
- Knowledge of refractory types: insulating castables, refractory and insulating firebricks, ceramic fiber blankets, and modules.
- Ensure all work complies with laws, codes, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Interface with Project Managers, Engineers, Vendors, and Clients to achieve project goals.
- Stay current with technology and trends in the profession.
- Provide guidance to Sales and Estimation teams on proposals, including steel factors and steel budgets; review client specifications.
- Travel to sites for field visits, third-party engineering resources, or group offices as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Civil Engineering (Structural), Architectural Engineering (Structural), or Structural Engineering (minimum requirement).
- Master of Science (MS) in Civil Engineering (Structural) or Civil Engineering (Construction) preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of technical structural engineering experience within oil and gas, petrochemical, or heavy industrial sectors.
Qualifications
- EIT (Engineer-in-Training) Certificate required; expectation to earn PE within 18 months of employment.
- PE (Professional Engineer) License or SE (Structural Engineer) License preferred.
- All candidates encouraged to complete the NCEES Structural Engineering exam within 36 months of employment and become licensed as a SE.
Skills
- Proficiency in structural design software: STAAD (or equivalent, e.g., RISA) and familiarity with AutoCAD/Navisworks.
- Proficiency in Excel for performing and creating design sheets and coordinating output with STAAD and AutoCAD.
- Good knowledge of API 560 and structural design codes: AISC, ASCE 7, UBC, and other international codes (Canadian, Australian, British).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and customer service orientation.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
