Structural Engineer

About the role

As part of our Baltimore, MD dive team, you will work with a professional engineering inspection team providing consulting services primarily in the Baltimore area. Infrequent overnight travel is required, and occasional travel to domestic and international waterfront destinations is available for those interested. This role involves evaluating marine structures and ports through above and underwater engineering inspections, report preparation, and structural repair design. You will also perform high-level analysis and design using modern workflows, including field tablets, UAS (drones), nondestructive testing, marine mapping, imaging, and modeling tools.

Moffatt & Nichol offers two mature in-house training programs for commercial diving and optional professional rope access, along with customized career development opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Perform site investigations of marine structures, bridges, and other infrastructure assets.
• Ensure the scope of work is fulfilled as directed and deliverables are submitted on schedule and within budget.
• Enter, manipulate, and prepare data for inspection reports, proposals, and other technical documents.
• Analyze deteriorated components of marine and bridge structures to assess load capacity.
• Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documentation.
• Collaborate with inspection team members and other engineering disciplines.
• Assist with civil and structural design.
• Perform other duties as required, with responsibilities subject to change.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an accredited university (structural coursework or focus preferred).
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required.
• Certified Commercial Diver required (ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA, ADAS, or completion of a U.S. military equivalent diving school).
• Entry level to 4+ years of related diving and inspection experience.
• Valid driver’s license in good standing.
• Boater Safety Card preferred.
• Availability and willingness to travel as required (most work is local/regional; overnight travel is typically less than 2 weeks).
• Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
• Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to pass a background check for Department of Defense credentials preferred.
• Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certification preferred.
• Must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening and background check (compliant with NIST 800-171).
• Legal ability to work in the U.S. and provide required documentation at hire (Moffatt & Nichol uses E-Verify).

Working conditions

• Office work requires ongoing design tasks and focus.
• Field work involves diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements.
• Ability to manage multiple simultaneous priorities.
• Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work may be required.

Physical requirements

• Excellent physical condition required for commercial diving and field work.
• Ability to carry heavy equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain.
• Must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat.

Pay

Base salary range: $33.00 to $50.00 per hour, based on experience, education, and professional registration. Additional compensation includes rope access and dive pay, along with a personal equipment reimbursement program. Salary range applies to candidates hired and working in the Maryland market.
