Structural Design Engineer supporting our client's Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group and providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group. The role involves producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. Approximately 15% travel is required, and the ability to work remotely with reliable internet access is essential.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize safety using a “Safety First” mentality and lead by example.
- Prepare high-quality calculation and design packages for constructing substation and transmission line facilities using CAD-based tools and company design standards.
- Design and analyze new or modified existing substation structures.
- Perform reinforced concrete design and structural steel analysis/design as needed.
- Mentor and support the development of other engineers through knowledge transfer.
- Coordinate and communicate with other departments involved in Civil Design.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and company committee members to resolve standards and material issues.
- Provide support to Construction Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance.
- Conduct site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction.
- Participate in design review meetings.
- Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
- Support the company’s design criteria and standardization efforts.
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management to achieve project team goals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (required).
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification or Professional Engineering License (preferred).
- 10+ years of experience in structural steel and concrete design.
- Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering.
- Experience with seismic, wind, and vibration analysis (preferred).
- Prior foundation design experience.
Skills
- Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes.
- Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.
- Working knowledge of OSHA codes as they relate to steel design.
- Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD, and STAAD Pro.
- Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools.
- Experience with analyzing steel connections.
- Experience in reinforced concrete design.
- Design experience in transmission line structures and/or foundations (a plus).
- Proficiency with standard office software applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with the ability to simplify technical issues.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and build relationships at all levels.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Customer-focused mindset with a willingness to meet needs and solicit feedback.
- Ability to mentor others and teach job-related skills.
