Responsibilities
- Majority of work includes bridge design and inspection projects for departments of transportation and municipalities in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and may also include rail related projects.
- Design duties include preparation of design calculations, plans, CAD drafting, and construction cost estimates while assisting the project manager to develop special provisions and specifications for DOT and Municipal clients.
- During construction, tasks include the review of Contractor submittals and preparing responses to requests for information under the guidance of a more senior engineer.
- Evaluation of existing structures and development of load ratings.
- Preparing engineering reports and technical studies, and assisting on other projects, as needed, including participation in roadway and site civil design activities.
- Performing inspection of bridges at various levels along with preparing the inspection reports.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of bridge inspection experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis.
- Master’s degree is preferred.
- Professional Engineering license, or ability to obtain within 1 year is highly preferred.
- Inspection experience including large complex bridges and bridges with fracture critical members is preferred.
- A working knowledge of MicroStation or AutoCAD is preferred.
- Bridge load rating experience preferred.
- Experience with AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications is preferred.
- Experience with MDOT SHA, MDTA, and VDOT design criteria and requirements is preferred.
- Understanding of national and state bridge inspection methods, evaluations, and report preparation is required.
- Successful Completion of FHWA/NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges training course is preferred.
- Ability to travel within the Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia area.
- Ability to climb ladders, and work at heights using various bridge inspection access equipment.
