Pay
- Street Maintenance I – Grade 14: $21.94 – $26.92 per hour
- Street Maintenance II – Grade 15: $22.94 – $28.09 per hour
- Street Maintenance III – Grade 17: $24.93 – $30.51 per hour
About the Role
Performs a variety of skilled duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of City roads and other City facilities. Positions report to the Streets/Storm Water Manager.
Responsibilities
- Operate front-end loader, dump truck, backhoe, snowplow, salt truck, street sweeper, and water truck for maintenance and repair of City streets.
- Remove, load, and transport asphalt, gravel, dirt, and other materials.
- Assist with City cleanup and bulky waste removal.
- Sweep and shovel debris from gutters and grates into trucks.
- Clear snow and ice from roads; haul debris, asphalt, sand, and other materials.
- Maintain 24-hour emergency call availability.
- Perform concrete work, including preparing sub-base, setting forms, installing reinforcement, and finishing concrete (Street Maintenance III).
- Inspect and maintain storm drains, traffic control signs, and devices (Street Maintenance III).
- Inspect and maintain equipment after operation (Street Maintenance III).
- Assist with City celebrations (Street Maintenance III).
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Utah Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with tanker endorsement (must obtain within six months for Street Maintenance I).
- Must live within 20 miles of the Midvale Public Works Facility.
- Must possess a home telephone for emergency and standby call-outs.
- On-call position; subject to random drug testing and periodic driver’s license verifications.
- Experience:
- Street Maintenance I: 2+ years as an equipment operator.
- Street Maintenance II: 3+ years as an equipment operator (or 1 year as Operator I).
- Street Maintenance III: 4+ years in concrete work, asphalt patching, and equipment operation (or 3 years as Operator II).
Qualifications
- ATSSA Flagger Certification.
- First Aid/CPR Training.
- Confined Space Training.
- Trench Shoring Training.
- Snow Plow Training (required within 12 months).
- Additional certifications for higher levels:
- Street Maintenance II: Manlift Training, Backhoe I, Loader I, Traffic Control Technician.
- Street Maintenance III: Concrete Finisher Certification, Backhoe II, Traffic Control Supervisor, Work Order Management System Proficiency.
Skills
- Considerable knowledge of operating manual and power hand tools.
- Working knowledge of light and heavy equipment (e.g., rollers, backhoes, sweepers, snowplows).
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in road work.
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the public.
- Street Maintenance III: Ability to assist Foreman in leadership responsibilities.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work with exposure to weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, and reaching.
- Frequent bending, lifting, and physical labor.
- Periodic local travel required.
- Considerable exposure to stress due to deadlines, human behavior, and job demands.
- Essential functions require talking, hearing, seeing, and dexterity.
- Mental application includes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
