Streets Crew Lead (Concrete)

About the Role

The Street Maintenance Crew Lead performs and leads skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, and traffic control in the public right-of-way. This role coordinates day-to-day field operations, trains crew members, ensures job site safety and efficiency, and provides technical direction and leadership to maintenance crews.

Receives general supervision from the Street Supervisor and directs the daily work of assigned street maintenance crew members, including training, guidance, and on-site supervision. Serves as acting supervisor in the absence of the Street Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, coordinate, and execute day-to-day street maintenance operations, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with city standards, regulations, and project specifications.
• Plan and assign tasks to maintenance crews, conduct daily briefings, and ensure proper allocation of labor and equipment.
• Monitor progress and quality of work on-site, set up safe and organized work zones, and adapt to job site challenges such as weather delays or equipment malfunctions.
• Oversee and participate in maintenance and construction activities related to asphalt paving, concrete placement, and traffic control systems, including:
  • Hot mix asphalt repairs, overlays, pothole patching, road widening, and full street reconstruction.
  • Operation or direction of paving machines, rollers, dump trucks, and other heavy machinery.
  • Installation or replacement of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, cross gutters, and curbs, including site preparation, forming, pouring, and finishing concrete surfaces.
• Manage installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control devices, including:
  • Applying traffic paint for lane striping, crosswalks, and curb markings.
  • Ensuring proper installation and maintenance of regulatory and warning signage in compliance with MUTCD standards.
  • Supervising temporary traffic control setups, including barricades, cones, arrow boards, and flagging operations.
  • Assisting with basic traffic signal maintenance, such as inspecting signal heads and pedestrian push buttons.
• Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections of tools and equipment, perform minor maintenance on vehicles, and log equipment usage and material quantities.
• Document completed work and assist with scheduling or planning future maintenance needs.
• Respond to emergencies, including snow accumulation, road hazards, flooding, and other urgent infrastructure failures.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school; plus one (1) year of vocational or technical training in street maintenance, construction, or a related field.
• Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in street maintenance or construction, including leadership or lead-worker responsibilities.
• Three (3) years of snow removal experience, with at least one (1) year minimum with Eagle Mountain City.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of public works construction techniques, MUTCD standards, and safe operation of light and heavy equipment (e.g., dump trucks, rollers, pavers, compactors, trackhoes, loaders, welding equipment, snow removal vehicles).
• Strong leadership and communication skills for supervising and training crews, enforcing safety protocols, and coordinating with supervisors and the public.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work orders.
• Physical ability to perform labor in all weather conditions and lift up to 50 pounds or more on occasion.
• Sound judgment, attention to detail, and ability to perform basic mathematical computations and maintain accurate records.
• Commitment to teamwork, safety, and high-quality workmanship.

Qualifications

• Valid Class A CDL.
• CPR certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Forklift certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Confined space certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Trench shoring certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Flagger certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Road scholar certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Traffic control technician certification (must obtain and maintain).
• Road master certification (must obtain and maintain).

Work Environment

Tasks involve a variety of physical activities, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing into and onto heavy equipment and vehicles. Daily local travel is required, with ongoing exposure to changing weather conditions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking.
