STREET SWEEPER OPERATOR I

City of Farmington – Public Works/Streets. One regular, full-time opening.

About the role

Under the supervision of the Street Division Foreman, this position performs routine street maintenance and construction tasks, operates light to medium automotive equipment, and maintains streets, parking lots, medians, alleys, and intersections. The role requires excellent customer service and the ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Operate street sweepers to clean and maintain streets, parking lots, medians, alleys, and intersections.
• Respond to emergency calls to clean up wrecks, oil, and gravel spills.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance on equipment, including checking oil, fluids, coolant, filters, lights, brooms, and greasing all inserts; wash unit daily.
• Perform mechanical repairs, including changing brooms, deflector plates, skid shoes, and troubleshooting rear and front engines.
• Prepare daily reports on sweeping hours, mileage, water gallons, loads of debris, and maintenance performed.
• Operate a variety of equipment, including jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand tools (shovels, brooms, rakes, pitchforks, pruners), dump trucks, snow control equipment, steel wheel and rubber tire rollers, crack sealing machines, loaders, and water trucks.
• Operate motor vehicles to support department and city business.
• Assist in setting up and cleaning job sites, including traffic control devices.
• Remove weeds, trash, and debris from work sites.
• Perform custodial tasks as needed.
• Be available for 24-hour on-call duty and able to report to the MOC within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience in a closely related construction field.
• Valid state Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
• One year of work experience in a construction-related field involving the operation of trucks or other light automotive equipment, or equivalent vocational training.
• Experience operating street sweepers, dump trucks, water trucks, crack sealing machines, jack-hammers, steel wheel and rubber tire rollers, vibrating skid plate tampers, hand tools, chain saws, weed eaters, and loaders.
• Ability to adapt to rotating shifts.
• Must have a telephone at residence.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequently required to stand, talk, or hear.
• Occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Regularly works in outside weather conditions.
• Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, and loud noise levels.
• Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Works with asphalt, crack sealing material, concrete, salt, liquid calcium chloride, liquid magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, herbicides, paint, traffic control signs, trash, weeds, tree limbs, dirt, rock, sand, and gravel.
• Frequent exposure to gasoline, diesel, paint, and asphalt fumes.

Pay

$21.0370 per hour. Street Sweeper Operators receive a 5% increase and advance to "Street Sweeper Operator II" after three years of service.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
