About the role
The City of Vernon seeks a full-time Street Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works Department. This position involves performing a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled tasks related to sewer and storm drain repairs, maintenance, and other related duties.
Responsibilities
- Assists in asphalt and concrete jobs
- Performs sign maintenance, graffiti removal, tree trimming, and street sweeping
- Maintains the sewer system by monitoring flow, performing flow studies, and confined space entry
- Cleans catch basins before rain and maintains the storm drain system during rain events
- Paints street legends, including stop signs, crosswalks, and railroad signs
- Maintains grounds and performs other maintenance duties as assigned
- Operates the vactor truck to clean and maintain the sewer and storm drain system
- Supports the relationship with the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior
- May perform standby and on-call duties as assigned, and respond to after-hours emergencies
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- At least two (2) full-time years of street maintenance and repair experience
- A valid California State Class B Commercial Driver’s License within one year of successful probation

- Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures
- Principles and practices of street and water distribution system maintenance and repair
- Street painting methods and equipment
- Sign maintenance practices
- Concrete and asphalt repair methods and practices
- Customer service standards and protocols
