About the role

Volunteers of America–Greater New York (VOA–Greater New York) is a leading anti-poverty organization serving neighbors in need across New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Westchester. Through 70+ programs, we support over 35,000 adults and children each year, including individuals experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, youth aging out of foster care, veterans, seniors, and children with developmental delays.

The Strategic Initiatives Leadership Fellow will work directly with members of the office of the CEO – the Chief of Staff, CEO, and Executive Assistant – to support the strategic and operational excellence of VOA-Greater New York. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in high-level management and nonprofit operations, while contributing to impactful projects and initiatives. The Fellow will oversee the CUNY civic engagement grant, aimed at boosting civic awareness and participation among individuals experiencing or who formerly experienced homelessness. This is a one-year fellowship, with a possibility of extending into a second year with increased responsibility and compensation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the office of the CEO, including scheduling, meeting preparation, and follow-up.
  • Lead and support special projects and initiatives for the office of the CEO, ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Act as a liaison between the office of the CEO and internal/external stakeholders; draft communications, reports, and presentations for various audiences.
  • Assist the office of the CEO in developing and executing organizational strategies; participate in planning sessions and provide insights and recommendations.
  • Conduct research on industry trends, best practices, and potential opportunities for the organization; prepare reports and presentations to inform decision-making.
  • Support the office of the CEO in preparing for board meetings, including creating agendas, compiling materials, and documenting minutes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and innovations within the organization; develop and implement solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Design and manage execution of deliverables for the CUNY civic engagement grant, including supervision of a CUNY fellow.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required with 2 years of professional experience in a relevant field, such as nonprofit management, public affairs, consulting, or business administration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • High level of discretion and ability to handle confidential information.
