About the role
This is an on-call, as required position without benefits. The position requires the ability to operate high pressure boilers, turbine generator, and auxiliary equipment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a neat and clean condition.
- Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community.
- Notify and/or obtain advice from the Engineer in Charge or call for assistance as may be appropriate in any situation.
- Test condition of the boiler water as directed.
- Read and record steam plant data hourly.
- Monitor, record, and control opacity emissions in accordance with Colby directives and the State of Maine DEP and federal regulations.
- Operate, change, and clean burners.
- Operate soot blowers.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and other repairs as directed.
- Perform all other tasks as directed by the Engineer in Charge.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- A Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operators license required.
- Mechanical ability to operate, maintain, and service of the mechanical equipment and systems used in high pressure steam plants.
- Ability to operate and maintain Biomass and Natural Gas Boilers and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment.
Physical Environment
General indoor and outdoor campus environment. Duties involve some sitting, though frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and considerable lifting is often required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand wrist motion is also necessary. Ability to enter confined spaces per Colby safety policies.

Employee will be required to dress and conduct themselves appropriately in accordance with Colby College polices.
