About the role
The Sterile Processing Technician will demonstrate competence in all aspects of sterile processing, decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution of sterile supplies. Duties include collecting, sorting, decontaminating, sterilizing, and storing instruments after use. The technician will also perform a variety of duties related to ordering and inventory management of instrument and supplies.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and log daily sterilization
- Perform and log biological test results for sterilizers
- Knowledge of sterilization parameters, temperature settings, autoclave cycles
- Package supplies for sterilization
- Demonstrate correct procedure for decontamination, washing, and sterilization of equipment
- Inspect instruments and report all defective instruments and equipment to the OR Manager
- Clean each item according to manufacturer's instructions
- Accurately label each item with name and expiration
- Demonstrate ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively and undertake responsibility of changing behavior or seeking further guidance as needed
- Assist in OR room for set-up and clean-up
- Prepare supplies, equipment, etc. to ensure minimum turnover and to enhance proficiency
- Apply principles of cost containment for proper and appropriate selection and utilization of supplies
- Respond and understand role in obtaining appropriate equipment and supplies in emergency situations
- Adhere to strict patient confidentiality standards
- Assist in transport of patients in a safe manner
- Provide clear, concise communication with staff, supervision, patients, and family
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Specialty Certification (after 2 years' service)
- Basic knowledge of aseptic technique
- Current CPR certification
- Awareness of exposure to high-risk environment

- Develops and maintains knowledge to perform as a self-motivated member of the peri-operative team
- Accepts patient care responsibilities and understands the role of obtaining the appropriate equipment and supplies especially in emergency situations
- Competence in all aspects of sterile processing, decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution of sterile supplies

- Knowledge of sterilization parameters, temperature settings, autoclave cycles
- Ability to clean and organize instruments and equipment for sterile wrapping
- Knowledge of chemical sterilization/disinfection, including proper handling and disposal
- Correct procedure for decontamination, washing, and sterilization of equipment
- Inspection and reporting of defective instruments and equipment to the OR Manager
- Cleaning items according to manufacturer's instructions
- Accurate labeling of items with name and expiration
- Evaluation of suggestions and criticism objectively and undertaking responsibility of changing behavior or seeking further guidance as needed
