Sterile Processing Technician 3 Team Lead (48X night shift)

This Sterile Processing Technician III – Team Lead functions as a primary lead and working resource for the Sterile Processing 48X Department supporting the Operating Room, focusing on the technical aspects of cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, sterilizing, and assembling functional instruments and equipment for surgical services. Additional duties include disinfecting, cleaning, and reassembling equipment such as ventilators and other patient care devices.

Responsibilities

• Team Lead, Resource and Liaison Responsibilities (20%): Provide leadership and serve as a resource for the Sterile Processing team.
• Decontamination Responsibility (20%): Oversee and perform decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment.
• Assembly Responsibilities (20%): Assemble and inspect surgical instruments and equipment for functionality.
• Sterilization Responsibilities (20%): Ensure proper sterilization of instruments and equipment.
• Surgical Case Cart Assembly (15%): Prepare surgical case carts with required instruments and supplies.
• Instrument Tracking System, Training and Other Duties (5%): Manage instrument tracking systems, provide training, and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• At least five (5) years of recent experience in a Sterile Processing Unit or similar setting.
• Certification as a CRCST from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or CSPDT from The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
• Must obtain an advanced certification from HSPA or CBSPD within 6 months of hire. Advanced certifications include:
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) from HSPA
  • Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) from CBSPD
  • Certification in Endoscope Reprocessing (CER) from HSPA
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) from CBSPD
  • Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) from HSPA
  • Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) from CBSPD
• Must maintain certification by completing continuing education units (CEUs) and renewing certifications as a condition of employment.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/training.
• Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience adhering to American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) recommended practices.
• Knowledge of AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses) recommended practices on care of instruments, scopes, powered surgical instruments, cleaning and processing of instruments, selection and use of packaging materials, surgical attire, traffic patterns in surgical suites, and operating room sanitation.
• Strong attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness to complete work in a timely and accurate manner.
• Independent critical thinking skills and initiative to recognize, identify, and solve problems, considering potential impacts on others, patients, and internal/external customers.
• Experience using Sterile Processing Unit programs and computers, including instrument tracking programs, email, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
• Ability to apply policy and procedure when making decisions.

• Ability to exercise sound judgment to recognize situations needing escalation and notify supervisors or management of unusual or unexpected situations.

About the Department

The Sterile Processing 48X department within Perioperative Services supports operating rooms by cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing surgical instrumentation, flexible scopes, and assembling case carts. The department also supports Patient Care Services, Ambulatory Services, and the Primary Care Network by cleaning, disinfecting reusable equipment, and sterilizing surgical instruments. Additional responsibilities include cleaning and restocking emergency crash carts, PAPR supply carts, airway boxes, and ICU transport bags. The department manages fiscal, material, and human resources to support surgical and patient care planning and coordination in the hospital and clinics.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $37.77 - $46.97.

Schedule

• Shift: Monday to Friday, 22:30 - 07:00
• Percentage of Time: 100%
• Works overtime, floats to other areas within Perioperative Services, and is available to work weekends, holidays, and meet departmental staffing needs.
• Required to meet on-call commitments evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• May be assigned to work at any Perioperative Sterile Processing location to meet operational needs.
• May need to work nights, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
