About the role

ChristianaCare is searching for an experienced Sterile Processing Technician I. The selected candidate will be responsible for cleaning, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing all instruments and equipment according to the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD), the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) current standards.

Incumbents are accountable for demonstrating awareness of personal and work area safety at all times; using evidence-based practices (EBP) and complying with facility safety policies and procedures in carrying out duties, including those for bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases. They must keep knowledge current on aseptic techniques and basic microbiology to understand disease transmission and the importance of clean and sterile supplies in patient care. Additionally, they are required to attend training in new sterilization practices and developments in microbiology, bacteriology, and therapeutic practices as they affect sterile supply operations.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and decontaminates surgical instruments and other medical equipment following established policy and procedure.
  • Inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes medical devices following manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedure.
  • Assembles, wraps, and labels basic and specialty instruments and sets according to information in the CensiTrac system for tracking purposes.
  • Receives, unloads, sorts, inspects, washes, and processes instruments and equipment for decontamination both manually and by automated means.
  • Reads, interprets, and records sterilization parameters from sterilizer recording mechanisms and completes records of sterilization process, chemical/biological test results, and sterilizer cleaning.
  • Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facility, in accordance with The Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI, and AORN standards.
  • Wraps and labels stainless steel items.
  • Operates and performs daily cleaning and maintenance of all departmental equipment per policies for multiple sterilization and decontamination equipment.
  • Inventories and restocks reprocessed sterile items in sterile storage areas.
  • Fills Operating Room case cart requisitions for scheduled next-day cases, add-on cases, and STAT cases with instruments, linen, stainless steel items, soft good supplies, etc.
  • Unloads washer-disinfector racks of decontaminated instruments and stainless steel items and places them in designated areas.
  • Assists with orientation and training of Sterile Processing Interns.
  • Maintains assigned work area in a clean and organized manner following written departmental housekeeping policy.
  • Answers telephone calls as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as required by the department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Sterile Processing Technician Certification (CBSPD/CRCST) required. Individuals employed prior to requirements will be grandfathered.

Schedule

Overnight shift: 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday, with weekend and holiday rotation.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $19.84 - $29.76. This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
