Responsibilities

  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment.
  • Assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
  • Fulfills standard precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Maintains biological and chemical wash solutions for quality and consistency.
  • Sorts sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers.
  • Monitors equipment functions, requisitions for maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
  • Maintains a clean work area.
  • Aids in maintaining departmental policies, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Proficiency and understanding of medical terminology that accompanies the SPD department.
  • Must have Sterile Processing & Distribution Certification.
  • Orthopedic experience preferred.
  • Total Joint experience preferred.

Special Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Standing or walking most of the day.
  • Sufficient mobility and strength to move throughout department and lift heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Pushing and pulling sterilizer carriages, case carts and wire supply carts.
  • Heavy lifting or bending associated with decontaminating soiled instruments, laundry placement and garbage from the Operating Room.
  • May be exposed to blood, sharp objects, and infectious diseases.
  • May be required to wear personal protection equipment for lengthy periods of time.
