Responsibilities
- Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment.
- Assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
- Fulfills standard precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
- Maintains biological and chemical wash solutions for quality and consistency.
- Sorts sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers.
- Monitors equipment functions, requisitions for maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Aids in maintaining departmental policies, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
- Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Proficiency and understanding of medical terminology that accompanies the SPD department.
- Must have Sterile Processing & Distribution Certification.
- Orthopedic experience preferred.
- Total Joint experience preferred.
Special Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Standing or walking most of the day.
- Sufficient mobility and strength to move throughout department and lift heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Pushing and pulling sterilizer carriages, case carts and wire supply carts.
- Heavy lifting or bending associated with decontaminating soiled instruments, laundry placement and garbage from the Operating Room.
- May be exposed to blood, sharp objects, and infectious diseases.
- May be required to wear personal protection equipment for lengthy periods of time.
