Responsibilities

• Work directly with surgery clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot, and recommend solutions for trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique
• Maintain high professional and ethical standards in all aspects of sterilization
• Serve as a resource and mentor for the sterile processing team and surgical clinical team
• Assume a lead role in the absence of the manager and/or coordinator
• Distribute instrument trays for surgical case carts based on surgery schedules, pick lists, and surgeon’s preference cards
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of instrumentation used during surgical procedures
• Maintain daily records for chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring of sterilization processes
• Conduct orientation for new team members
• Act as the patient’s advocate to ensure the safest and most correct sterilization methods for all patient care instruments and equipment
• Ensure a safe environment through specific infection control procedures
• Determine the best processing methods for highly technical and evolving patient care instrumentation
• Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and federal, state, and local standards
• Comply with all Orlando Health policies and procedures
• Work independently in all areas and participate in unit quality control and process improvement activities
• Complete special projects without supervision as assigned by departmental leadership
• Understand the relationship of the role to patient care and maintain a safe environment for team members and patients

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Minimum 2 years of experience in sterile processing
• Nationally certified through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• Maintain required continuing education units (CEUs) in accordance with the certifying body
