Job Requirements
Preceptor for Trainees
Prepares trainees for decontamination, prep and pack, sterilization; TOR; case cart assembly, sterile storage and distribution.
Decontamination/Retrieval of Soiled Instruments
- Performs decontamination activities, retrieves contaminated instrument sets from patient care areas.
- Uses proper techniques in the identification, containment and handling of contaminated instruments.
Prep and Pack/Assembly
- Inspects, assembles and prepares instrumentation for terminal sterilization.
- Selects the correct packaging type and method(s) for sterilization.
- Labels packaged devices accurately.
Sterilization
- Selects the correct sterilization method(s) for items being sterilized.
- Monitors the sterilization process using mechanical, chemical and biological indicators.
- Documents cycle parameters, results and recalls in the event of failures.
Sterile Storage/Case Carts
- Assembles and delivers case carts to the surgical suite.
- Dispenses and delivers instruments and equipment to nursing departments and clinics.
- Maintains an accurate record of supplies and/or instruments dispensed.
- Pulls surgical instrumentation and conducts periodic supply inventory.
- Immediately reports supplies and/or instrumentation outages to CS leadership.
- Initiates supply returns to ensure accurate inventory levels.
- Maintains knowledge of surgical procedures, supplies and products.
- Frequently monitors the sterile storage area for events compromising the integrity of items stored.
HLD and Flexible/Rigid Endoscope Processes
- Performs decontamination activities for flexible scopes, transesophageal and other dilators.
- Thoroughly brushes and cleans all ports in a manner to prevent aerosolization.
- Decontaminates and disinfects or sterilizes scopes and dilators.
- Cleans and disinfects sink after each scope or dilator.
- Dons clean PPE; loads flexible scopes in AER with correct hook-up.
- Maintains knowledge of flexible endoscope reprocessing competencies.
Storage and Issue of Scopes
- Cleans and restocks endoscopy procedure carts.
- Issues scopes utilizing hard containers designed for scope transport.
- Assists clinical staff with at the point of use handling issues and equipment malfunctions.
- Stores scopes and equipment in designated storage areas for distribution.
- Cleans storage shelves to maintain a clean work environment.
- Retrieves contaminated scopes from patient care areas for sterile processing.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- 6 months or more years of CSP experience.
- Must be certified CRCST or CBSPDT.
- If assigned to reprocessing flexible endoscopes, must obtain certification in scope reprocessing within 12 months of assumption of those duties.
Skills
- Basic knowledge of the use of a PC and computerized database system preferred or demonstrated ability to learn within one year.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary in order to work with various clinical personnel, resolve problems and to properly identify and label supplies for inventory purposes.
