Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Tech I supports all areas of the Sterile Processing department and the Surgical Services unit. Specifically, this position is responsible for the coordination of cleaning activities in the unit. This position must operate in an organized manner and communicate clearly to assist in the smooth flow of sterile processing activities. The Sterile Processing Tech I is responsible for the environmental care of instruments, sterility process and the ongoing maintenance of anesthesia carts. Furthermore, this position, is accountable for the utilization and maintenance of surgical cleaning supplies and responsible for orienting new staff members.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities Of The Job
- Performs instrument room activities as requested by the care team and the Sterile Processing Management Team.
- Performs daily cleaning and surgical assistant activities to ensure patient care is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Knows appropriate cleaning techniques and standards to remain in compliance with hospital standards.
- Aids in the maintenance of instrument and supply sterilization and overall cleaning functions to support smooth effective patient care.
- Supports cross training and orienting new staff members.
- Communicates with the patient care delivery team to ensure patient care needs are met in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and standards.
Specific Job-related Responsibilities And Duties
- Consistently applies infection control policies/procedures.
- Attends department specific education/training, in-services, staff meetings.
- Maintains department sterilization requirements to help reduce surgical site infections.
- Reassembles surgical trays per pick sheets carefully and completely.
- Efficiently and completely picks surgical cases and add-ons.
- Effectively decontaminates surgical instrumentation after use.
- Collaborates positively with team to coordinate patient/procedure activities.
- Dispenses DME's in a timely efficient manner.
- Assists the service with information, reports to improve operations.
Qualifications/Work Experience
- Written and Oral communication skills.
- Experience in Acute Care Hospital / Surgery Service Environment.
- Knowledge of cleaning and sterilization technique preferred.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
- Specialty Certification preferred.
