About the Role

Provides a continuous flow of sterile/reusable supplies, equipment, and surgical instrumentation through centralized collection, inspection, decontamination, assembly, preparation, disinfection, sterilization, and monitoring for hospital areas. Operates with occasional guidance, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and hospital policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment.
  • Receives and inventories departmental supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Cleans and decontaminates instrumentation and equipment according to Manufacturer Instructions for Use (MIFU) and departmental policies.
  • Scans instrumentation and assembles it according to prescribed procedures and techniques.
  • Prepares instrumentation and equipment for sterilization following recommended procedures.
  • Performs, documents, and monitors all quality control tools.
  • Operates all departmental equipment safely and effectively.
  • Conducts remedial and preventive maintenance on equipment (e.g., insulation testing, demagnetizing instrumentation, air pressure testing).
  • Performs variety qualification testing on equipment (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.).
  • Manages inventory control, including care and handling techniques to maintain longevity and sterility of containment devices.
  • Reads, interprets, and applies Manufacturer Instructions for Use (MIFU).
  • Applies knowledge of regulations and standards governing sterile processing functions.

Technical Capabilities

  • Environmental Sterility & Safety (Intermediate): Demonstrates proficiency in maintaining environmental sterility and safety in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Surgical Equipment Knowledge (Intermediate): Understands equipment performance criteria, capabilities, and limitations; uses equipment to accomplish basic tasks.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance (Intermediate): Maintains equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Inventory Control (Intermediate): Demonstrates proficiency in inventory control for practical applications of moderate difficulty.
  • Quality Assurance (Intermediate): Performs, documents, and monitors quality control tools; applies MIFU and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience.
  • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or Certified Sterile Processing Technician (The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc.).
